Brochure Design Detailing David Carson

A tribute to graphic designer, David Carson, this brochure details his life, career, style, and legacy. Designed to imitate Carson’s iconic and innovative style, this brochure breaks the “rules” of design. Carson’s work for magazines, such as Ray Gun, in the ‘90s brought an innovative approach to typography and page design during the grunge era. Known as the “Godfather of Grunge,” Carson’s style untethers legibility from communication as he uses typography as a form of expression. His style is also characterized by collaging, chaotic typography, and overlapped photos that avoid grid formats, information hierarchy, and consistent patterns. As a result, his work is frenzied, bold and disorienting. Imitating his unconventional and experimental style for this brochure, I channeled his abstract, loose and intuitive approach to design by playing around with torn paper, magazine clippings, and shifting photocopied images mid-scan. I also chose several grunge style typefaces and chaotically spread them around the pages, mixing weights and sizes to emulate Carson’s bold type treatment. 8.5” x 11”
